Well, May is here and yes, the fish
are biting and the water is blue.
Yes, the Mississippi River is up,
but the blue water has been as close
as 12 miles off shore. Numerous Blue
Marlin and White Marlin releases
have been reported along with one
Captain even reporting a triple hook
up of White Marlin this past week.
The tuna and wahoo bite has been off
the charts with both quantity and
quality.
We are making our final preparations
for this year’s Cajun Canyons
Billfish Classic and from the looks
of things, it should be a dandy. We
will be utilizing both
Venice Marina and
Cypress Cove Marina, with
tournament headquarters is back at
Cypress Cove Marina & Lodge.
Our festivities start on Tuesday,
May 31 with our Dock Party,
sponsored by Cypress Cove Marina &
Lodge. Come meet your fishing
buddies and fellow Captains and
exchange fish stories on the dock.
Wednesday, June 1 is our Official
Registration day, starting at 2:00
pm and continuing until 7:00 pm,
followed by our Captain’s Meeting
and Kick-Off Party with the boys
from
Acme Oyster House trying to
outdo themselves again. Our “Special
Guest of Honor”, the Master of Lure
Makers, Mr. Joe Yee returns from
Hawaii, sponsored by Professional
Sports Shop, will be showcasing his
famous trolling lures. Additionally,
our Official Tournament Artist,
Mr.
Rick Bogert, will be displaying
his outstanding artwork for everyone
to enjoy.
Thursday, June 2, we will be hosting
our annual “Hangover Clinic” with
Absolut Vodka and
TABASCO bloody marys; and yes,
there will be plenty of strong
coffee also. Additionally, our
Optional Entries will be open from
10:00 am until 1:00 pm. We will
continue the Cajun tradition with
our Blessing of the Fleet at 3:30
pm, with boats departing at 4:00 pm.
Please remember, boats may depart
any Gulf of Mexico port, but must
video their GPS upon departure. If
you plan on departing from other
than Venice, please check our
website for Tournament Information
sheets with tournament headquarters
telephone numbers, Committee Boat
information, and Billfish Score
Cards. All boats must weigh in and
turn in Billfish Score Cards at
Cypress Cove Marina in Venice.
Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4
will be our fishing days, with
fishing starting at 12:01 am Friday
morning and continuing until
Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm. Boats
must be checked in via radio at
Cypress Cove no later than 7:00 pm,
Saturday, June 4.
Saturday evening, June 4 there will
be loads more of scrumptious Cajun
food and our Open Bar for all to
tell fish stories and enjoy the
camaraderie. Sunday morning, June 5,
even more Bloody Mary’s and Hot
coffee for those with dreary eyes
from the night before as we get
ready for our Awards Ceremony
starting at 10:00 am. We will be
proudly presenting custom-designed
Randy Rich of Inside Design
trophies along with custom-inlayed
teak Step Boxes from
Release Marine for our
Tag/Release winners. And yes, we
will again be honoring our winning
Captain’s with special gift bags
sponsored by comefishLa.com,
Maui Jim Sunglasses, and
Professional Sports Shop.
So, there you have the outline, it’s
not too late, (get
your entry form here), come fish
with the likes of Pipe Dream,
Bandit, Reel Addiction, TIA II, Reel
