Well, May is here and yes, the fish are biting and the water is blue. Yes, the Mississippi River is up, but the blue water has been as close as 12 miles off shore. Numerous Blue Marlin and White Marlin releases have been reported along with one Captain even reporting a triple hook up of White Marlin this past week. The tuna and wahoo bite has been off the charts with both quantity and quality.

We are making our final preparations for this year’s Cajun Canyons Billfish Classic and from the looks of things, it should be a dandy. We will be utilizing both Venice Marina and Cypress Cove Marina, with tournament headquarters is back at Cypress Cove Marina & Lodge.

Our festivities start on Tuesday, May 31 with our Dock Party, sponsored by Cypress Cove Marina & Lodge. Come meet your fishing buddies and fellow Captains and exchange fish stories on the dock.

Wednesday, June 1 is our Official Registration day, starting at 2:00 pm and continuing until 7:00 pm, followed by our Captain’s Meeting and Kick-Off Party with the boys from Acme Oyster House trying to outdo themselves again. Our “Special Guest of Honor”, the Master of Lure Makers, Mr. Joe Yee returns from Hawaii, sponsored by Professional Sports Shop, will be showcasing his famous trolling lures. Additionally, our Official Tournament Artist, Mr. Rick Bogert, will be displaying his outstanding artwork for everyone to enjoy.

Thursday, June 2, we will be hosting our annual “Hangover Clinic” with Absolut Vodka and TABASCO bloody marys; and yes, there will be plenty of strong coffee also. Additionally, our Optional Entries will be open from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. We will continue the Cajun tradition with our Blessing of the Fleet at 3:30 pm, with boats departing at 4:00 pm. Please remember, boats may depart any Gulf of Mexico port, but must video their GPS upon departure. If you plan on departing from other than Venice, please check our website for Tournament Information sheets with tournament headquarters telephone numbers, Committee Boat information, and Billfish Score Cards. All boats must weigh in and turn in Billfish Score Cards at Cypress Cove Marina in Venice.

Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4 will be our fishing days, with fishing starting at 12:01 am Friday morning and continuing until Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm. Boats must be checked in via radio at Cypress Cove no later than 7:00 pm, Saturday, June 4.

Saturday evening, June 4 there will be loads more of scrumptious Cajun food and our Open Bar for all to tell fish stories and enjoy the camaraderie. Sunday morning, June 5, even more Bloody Mary’s and Hot coffee for those with dreary eyes from the night before as we get ready for our Awards Ceremony starting at 10:00 am. We will be proudly presenting custom-designed Randy Rich of Inside Design trophies along with custom-inlayed teak Step Boxes from Release Marine for our Tag/Release winners. And yes, we will again be honoring our winning Captain’s with special gift bags sponsored by, Maui Jim Sunglasses, and Professional Sports Shop.

So, there you have the outline, it’s not too late, (get your entry form here), come fish with the likes of Pipe Dream, Bandit, Reel Addiction, TIA II, Reel Worthless, G-Z Girl, Junkyard Dog, Miss Remy, Bushwhacker, Reel Bounty, Crazy J, Lady Lab, L A Lady, and many more of the finest fishing teams from all over the Gulf of Mexico. Let’s put Venice back on the map for a good reason this year!
